Commentary

And when their ultimate aim was that they say: 'Indeed, he is fabricating from himself,' the matter turned against them, so he said: 'Indeed, you are' meaning, O most noble of the messengers, 'a warner,' meaning, a fearful one in the manner of the inevitable that must happen, with your knowledge of what you are warning about, the knowledge that there is no doubt in it, 'who fears it,' meaning, in it is an eligibility to fear it with great fear, so he works for it due to his knowledge of its coming without a doubt, and his knowledge of his death without a doubt, and his knowledge that everything that has been confirmed to occur is near. And this does not suit the specification of its time, for indeed, the one who has the eligibility of fear is not increased by its ambiguity except in fear, and the other is not increased by that except in audacity and wrongdoing. So, We have not sent you except for warning of it, not for informing of its time, for the first benefit is prior to the second. And you are not in anything of what they describe you with as a lie from them, for We do not send the messengers except as bringers of good tidings and warners, nor are you sent to specify the time of the Hour and knowledge that has been determined. Rather, He limited it to the one who fears, for the one who does not fear does not benefit from his warning, so it was as if he did not receive the warning. And for this meaning, He added a reference to the fact that he is deeply rooted in warning those who fear, while as for the other, he is a warner to him in general, meaning, he receives the form of warning because he is his warner in the sense that he does not receive the meaning of warning.
