Commentary
And when what is after the limits of Allah is the worldly life, he made it clear by saying: "And he preferred" meaning he honored, advanced, and chose "the worldly life" by making the effect of the immediate, lowly life greater in his sight than the effect of the high, ultimate Hereafter due to its absence. So he was like the animals, having no perception of anything other than the present particulars. He became engrossed in all of its actions and turned away from preparing for the Hereafter through worship and the refinement of the soul, and he did not prevent himself from following desires.
