Commentary

He raised its height. This means he made the measure of its elevation from the earth or its thickness that goes upward lofty. It is said in the dictionary: 'the height is the ceiling, or from the top of the house to its bottom, or the height of everything.' Abu Hayyan said: 'The height is the elevation that is between the surface of the sky that is nearest to us and the surface that is above it.' And He made it level, meaning He adjusted it afterward by making it even, with nothing in it higher than something else, nor lower, nor any irregularities in it. And He perfected it with that which completed its perfection from the stars and others. And He made the measure of the thickness of each sky and what is between each two skies, and the thickness of each earth and what is between each two earths equal, with nothing of that exceeding the other in essence.
