Commentary

And when the persistence in denial was from one who saw and knew the truth, especially if he was a great one who was very far removed from it, he indicated it with a tool of delay, along with its indication of the reality of delay as well. So he said: ﴿Then he turned away﴾, meaning Pharaoh after a period of time and deliberation, turned away greatly by persisting in the greatest of what he was in [of] tyranny after great events and long observations. While he was ﴿striving﴾, meaning he was working with the utmost of his effort, like one who is hastening to the utmost in nullifying the divine matter due to his lack of understanding and the corruption of his opinion, and he refused to accept the truth.
