Commentary

So when they are, it causes them, as a result of this blowing - which is the second - to be surprised with the utmost speed, being alive and standing on the surface of the wide, flat white earth, which Allah renews for the recompense. Its vastness is as if it has swallowed them, due to their multitude which exceeds counting and surpasses limits. It is named so because the drink flows in it from the sahirah, which is the flowing spring, or because its traveler stays awake out of fear, just as sleep is a state of safety, or because this earth in particular has no sleep in it due to the long standing and the turning of circumstances that lead to calamities.
