Commentary
And when the worker in 'If' is estimated as if to say: 'Shall we return then to our former state and stand as we were?' This is indicated by His saying, exalted is He, about them: 'They said' meaning at one time: 'That' meaning the return to the first state, which is truly astonishing and far from reason in their claim: 'Then' meaning when we are returned to our first life, we have nothing as we were born, we have nothing, and we lose all that we strove to attain and gather and establish. 'A return' meaning a return and repetition and a turning back. 'Loss' meaning it is due to the severity of our loss in it because of what we have lost of what we attained from [the state and] the outcome, and good qualities, deeply rooted in loss until it is as if it is the losing one. And perhaps he expressed it in the past tense because they did not allow this saying except once in a lifetime. As for the majority of their sayings, it was that they would be in the estimation of resurrection happier than the believers based on what they are upon in this world, and similar to this is the lie against Allah.
