Commentary
And when he described it with disturbance and humiliation, he explained it so that he may know from it that whoever says the opposite of their words will have the opposite of their description of stability, tranquility, and apparent honor. So he said: ﴿They say﴾ meaning in this world a saying they renew at every moment without fear or shame, mocking and denying.
﴿Are we indeed to be returned﴾ meaning after death from those who are characterized by rejecting us, whoever they may be ﴿to our former state﴾ meaning in the life we were in before death, which is our first state, from their saying: So-and-so returned to his former state, meaning the way he came by which he dug it, meaning he affected it by his walking just as feet affect the paths, and the tracks in the roads. He called the one who digs a pit a digger in an exaggerated manner, and that is its reality. Then it was said to one who was in a matter and then left it and then returned to it: He returned to his former state. And it was said: The former state is the land which is the place of the tracks.
