Commentary

And when he mentioned what is the cause for the continuation of the species, he mentioned what is the cause for its preservation from the rapidity of corruption. He said: "And We made" meaning by that which belongs to Us from greatness, "your sleep" which We have made the body inclined to accept, "a state of rest" [meaning -] a cessation from sensation and movement which has exhausted you in your daytime, along with the extension and continuation, a relief for the animal powers and the bodily senses, and a removal of their fatigue. Although it is a cessation of the completeness of life, it is a reminder of the great death, and awakening is a reminder of playfulness. Al-Zajjaj said: Sleep is to be cut off from movement, and the soul is in it.
