Commentary
And when that day became great with silence out of fear of the One with might, "And the voices humbled before the Most Merciful, so you hear nothing but a whisper" [Taha: 108]. He indicated to it by what it deserves in terms of its greatness and said: "That" meaning the one indicated by it due to the distance of its status, the greatness of its rank, and the elevation of its position. "The Day of Truth" meaning in the daily occurrence of it, as it is established in itself, so there must be its existence and no cessation for it, established without doubt for the wise, and established is all that He affirmed and false is all that He denied. And when He established from His greatness what others are unable to establish similarly, and He had created the powers, the ability, and the action by choice. It is the right of every wise person to seek refuge from what saves him. This caused a reminder of salvation from it and encouragement towards it in His saying: "So whoever wills" meaning to take from those who are obligated and whom He has permitted, "let him take" meaning with all his effort, "to his Lord" meaning his Creator, the One who is good to him, or the Lord of that day by employing the powers that Allah has given him in good deeds. "A place of return" meaning a return which is the return from what he will receive therein of reward through faith and obedience. For indeed, Allah has made for them power and choice, but no one among them can will anything except by the will of Allah.
