Commentary
﴿Gardens﴾ meaning orchards in which there are types of trees that bear fruit and basil, to combine with the pleasure of food the pleasure of sight and smell. They are surrounded by walls and enclosed by them. Ibn Jarir said: If there are no enclosing walls around it, it is not called a garden. He specified the grapevines for their goodness, beauty, and honor, and what is in them of the pleasure of taste. He expressed the trees by their fruits to indicate that they are only found when they are laden with fruit, and that their fruit is [the majority of] their benefit. So he said: ﴿and grapes﴾.
