Commentary
And when he clarified that the Day of Separation is the Great News, after indicating it and mentioning what is in it of the events, he mentioned what leads to the two abodes of destiny. He said after reminding of what is in the mountains of torment with their severity and what is in them of beasts, insects, thorny trees, and intertwined branches, and other wonders of the decree, confirming their denial: "Indeed, Hellfire" meaning the fire that its inhabitants are thrown into, frowning at them with the utmost of what they hate. "It was" meaning its nature and character "a watch" meaning a place of surveillance for the enemies of Allah, watching them in it are the keepers of the fire. When they see them, they will throw them into it. And for the allies of Allah, the keepers of Paradise watch them in it to save them from the fire upon their arrival, or it is a vigilant watcher for the disbelievers until it becomes a manifestation of surveillance for the gathering of its inhabitants, so that not a single one of them escapes, like the piercing for the many stabs, and the excessive for the exaggeration in abundance. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, that on the bridge of Hell, there are seven councils. At the first, he is asked about the testimony that there is no deity but Allah. If he comes with it complete, he will pass to the second where he will be asked about prayer. If he comes with it complete, he will pass to the third where he will be asked about zakat. If he comes with it complete, he will pass to the fourth where he will be asked about fasting. If he comes with it complete, he will pass to the fifth where he will be asked about Hajj. If he comes with it complete, he will pass to the sixth where he will be asked about Umrah. If he comes with it complete, he will pass to the seventh where he will be asked about wrongdoings. If he exits from it, otherwise it will be said: Look, if he has voluntary deeds, they will complete his actions. And when he finishes, he will be taken to Paradise.
