Commentary
And when it was from the signs that cannot be denied that in the earth there are gardens that surpass enumeration, He expressed it in the plural form to belittle it in comparison to the manifest greatness and the decisive word. He said: ﴿and gardens﴾ meaning gardens that contain various types of trees and edible plants and others. ﴿Alfafan﴾ meaning trees that are intertwined and gathered together due to abundant irrigation, a plural of 'luff' like a trunk. Al-Baghawi said: It is said to be the plural of a plural; it is said: a garden is 'jannah', and its plural is 'luff' - with the 'lam' pronounced, and the plural of the plural is 'alfaf'. This which he mentioned includes flowing and standing waters, thus he sufficed by mentioning it instead of detailing it. Muqatil said: And all of this which he mentioned is more astonishing than resurrection.
