Commentary
And when he mentioned what removes moisture with its heat, he followed it with what extinguishes the heat with its moisture and coldness, from which food and drink arise. These are what complete life, and their generation is from the environment with the cradle and the roof. He made that resemble what is generated between the two spouses from children. The sky is like the husband, and the earth is like the wife, and water is like semen, and plants from the stars and trees are like children. He said: 'And We sent down' meaning from what others are unable to do, 'from the rain-bearing clouds' meaning the clouds that are heavy with water, so the winds are about to squeeze them to rain, just as the harvest is ready to be harvested. Al-Farra' said: The rain-bearing cloud is the cloud that is adorned with rain but does not rain, like the woman who is about to menstruate but has not yet menstruated. And Al-Razi said: The clouds that are about to rain are like the woman who is close to menstruation. 'A copious water' meaning pouring forth abundantly, with one part following another. It is said: He poured forth and he poured forth abundantly.
