And when he mentioned these categories, he explained them by saying: ﴿An excuse or a warning﴾. Both are in the accusative as states, plural for excuse, meaning the act of excusing or the excuser, and warning, meaning the act of warning or the warner. That is, these are divided into an excuse if it has brought beneficial rain that is nourishing and not harmful after a drought, for it would be as if it is an excuse for that hardship. And if the angels have brought glad tidings, it is clear in the excuse, especially if it is after a warning. And it is for warnings if it has brought thunderbolts or what is in its meaning from great cold and the like. Likewise, the angels, and all of it is a reason for the remembrance of Allah, which is a reason for the excuse of people through repentance, and a reason for the punishment of those who are heedless of gratitude, and they face that with sins or attribute that to the stars.
