Commentary

And when this one made it known that for them is the eternal woe, he mentioned that its cause is the lack of faith in the Qur'an. He said that whoever does not believe in the Qur'an has not believed in anything at all. So he said, explaining the meaning of the words: "So by what saying" meaning a mention that is renewed with its descent upon the one sent with it at every time a need calls for it. "After this" meaning after this Qur'an which is a witness for itself regarding its truthfulness in relation to Allah, the Exalted, due to what it possesses of eloquence in its structures in relation to every sentence and in relation to the arrangement of sentences with one another, and in informing about the unseen and urging towards the high virtues and pointing out the rulings and other than that from the seas of knowledge and gardens of arts. So Allah, considering that, is the witness that it is His speech. "They believe" meaning they renew their faith because of it with everything that the Prophet brought. If they do not believe in this saying which Allah is a witness that it is His speech due to what it includes after its miraculousness of clear proofs, and noble and righteous meanings, and arrangements suitable for nature and the delicate nuances that soften every heart, and the glad tidings that excite every ear, then whoever does not believe in it has not believed in the saying of others. For there is nothing that approaches it or is comparable to it. So how can something claim to be equal to it or rival it? Such a thing is only said when despair is near from the admonished, and the custom is decisive regarding the arrival of punishment at that time and the descent of calamity. So it is among the greatest types of threats. The end of it has returned to the beginning of it in the warning to the deniers, and the beginning of it has applied to the end of it in the disgrace of the criminals - and Allah is the guide to the right path.
