Commentary
And when he understood from the interpretation [by 'in'] that they are firmly established in this, just as the container is firmly established in its contents, he said, alerting that what is meant by fruit is all types of food. He expressed it this way to indicate that every food in it is for enjoyment, and there is nothing in it for the purpose of gaining benefit other than pleasure or for warding off harm: ﴿Eat﴾ meaning it is said to them: consume all types of food for the purpose of enjoyment and pleasure, not for the sake of maintaining health, for that is achieved without it. ﴿And drink﴾ meaning from all types of drinks likewise, for its sources are not exclusively from water, but from every drink, both for eating and drinking. ﴿Enjoyable﴾ there is no expectation of harm in any of that. And He increased their bliss by making that a compensation, saying: ﴿For what you used to﴾ meaning by your natures that I created you upon. ﴿Do﴾ meaning in this world of good deeds based on the foundation of knowledge that resulted in the belief in Paradise, which necessitated entering it, just as it necessitated (p-184) the disbelievers' denial of the Fire, their entering it, and their punishment therein, and their denial of Paradise being their expulsion from it and their deprivation of its bliss as a just recompense.
