And when they were too few to respond to this and too insignificant to be given time to speak, he said, translating their state after this saying, warning that if they had understood, they would have cried for themselves now, for there is no way out at that time: ﴿Woe on that Day﴾ meaning when this saying is said to them, it will be an increase in their punishment ﴿for the disbelievers﴾ meaning those firmly established in disbelief [that the heavens -] will part as they used to deny that He will separate between them after death.
