Commentary

And when the intention was to increase their reproach and reprimand, and to terrify them, He repeated the command, describing what they were commanded to do, saying: "Go forth." This is according to the reading of the majority. And the reading of Ruways from Ya'qub is in the past tense to indicate the completeness of their submission there, and that there is nothing preventing them at all. It is an introductory statement in response to one who says: What was their state at this terrible command? "To a shade" means from the smoke of Hell, which is called 'the scorching smoke' when it was mentioned in the event of the Day of Judgment, "with three branches" that branch out from its greatness, just as you see the great smoke dispersing in wisps. The specificity of the three is because the denial of Allah, His Books, and His Messengers is such that each one of them will punish them with a punishment they will know there for which denial it is, or because the barrier from the lights of the Sacred is the senses, imagination, and delusion, or because the cause of it is the imaginary power residing in the brain, and the anger that is in the heart's eye, and the lust that is on its left side. It is said: A neck will emerge from the fire, which will be three groups: fire, light, and smoke. The light will stand with the believers, the pure flame with the disbelievers, and the smoke with the hypocrites. It will be like this until the end of the reckoning. Al-Razi said: The branches are flame, spark, and smoke.
