And when He indicated at the beginning of creation the completeness of His power, He followed that indication with the conclusion of His matter and what He planned in both of them from the benefits. He said: ﴿Did We not make﴾ meaning We make by what We have caused by Our greatness ﴿the earth a container﴾ meaning a vessel capable of gathering what is placed in it [and enclosing it in a gathering -] so it encompasses and holds, and it is a name for what can contain, for example, iron, meaning it is covered with silver and encompasses and gathers, like [the terms] damm and jima' for what encompasses and gathers, or it is a source described by it or a gathering of kafi, like sa'imah and siyam or a gathering of kafat, which is the vessel. And if We had willed, We would have made it a spreader for you when you are placed in it, just as plants spread, and We will make that when We intend resurrection.
