Commentary
(p-164) Surah Al-Mursalat, also called Al-‘Urf. Its purpose is to indicate the [final] state of man, rewarding the grateful with blessings and punishing the disbelievers with the torment of Hell, on the Day of Judgment after the gathering of bodies and the revival of the souls after the folding of this existence and the transformation of the known world by which He, glorified and exalted is He, has the power to cause vegetation to grow, create sustenance, send down knowledge, and expand understanding for the revival of souls and the happiness of bodies through hidden causes and visible and invisible reasons. It also involves the development of man through the stages of age, placing faith in what pleases the bodies, and bringing forth disbelief in the people of disappointment and loss, while all share in the styles of this Qur'an, which both humans and jinn have failed to produce anything like a verse [from it] despite their multitude and the length of time. Its name is Al-Mursalat and [also] Al-‘Urf, which clearly indicates that for those who reflect on the sections and remember what it indicates of the meanings of the words (In the name of Allah) who has complete power over what He wills, (the Most Gracious) who has general grace upon all the servants, (the Most Merciful) who has specifically completed that grace for the people of His pleasure, and with Him is more. * * When Surah Al-Insan concluded with the promise to His allies and the warning to His enemies, and the disbelievers were denying that, He began this [Surah] with oaths that this will certainly happen, saying: ﴿By the Mursalat﴾ meaning by the winds and the angels ﴿in succession﴾ meaning for the purpose of delivering goodness from the Qur'an and the Sunnah and other acts of kindness, and for delivering the spirit and blessings and facilitating matters in sustenance and others, or while they are successive and abundant, some following others, from the saying of the Arabs: People are one ‘Urf to so-and-so - when they turn to him and increase, and it is said: They came as one ‘Urf, and they are upon him like the ‘Urf of the hyena - when they gather against him.
