Commentary

﴿Indeed, we only feed you﴾ O those in need ﴿for the sake of Allah﴾ meaning for the essence of the King who possesses majesty and honor because He commanded us to do so. He expressed it this way because the face is something that one feels shy before, and it is hoped for and feared upon seeing it.

And when they affirmed this sincerity, they realized it by negating what would change it. They explained it (p-140) as that which cannot be except by it, saying: ﴿We do not want from you﴾ meaning for that ﴿a reward﴾ meaning for us from the worldly matters ﴿nor thanks﴾ by any words or actions. It is as if this source was chosen [the increased -] like entering, exiting, and sitting, implying that what is negated is what one would have to strive for. As for the example of love and supplication, it is not so. If they had wanted something from that, it would not have been for Allah; and it has been narrated regarding the reason for the revelation of this verse: "That Ali and his two sons and their mother Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with them all, preferred over themselves for three days, and they awoke on the fourth trembling. When the Prophet ﷺ saw them, he was saddened by that. Then Gabriel, blessings and peace be upon him, came to him with this surah congratulating him for it." Nor is it unlikely that one could endure hunger for this duration because perhaps the soul has a strong state of immersion in the love of Allah, glorified and exalted is He, or otherwise. Thus it descended to the body and occupied the nature from digesting the parts, so hunger does not occur, just as we see a person remaining in acute illness for a period without consuming anything from food and his body is not affected by that. So it is not strange that natural actions may cease for some of the travelers, and this is one of the two opinions regarding the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: "Indeed, I spend the night with my Lord who feeds me and gives me drink."
