And when someone fears something, he strives for security from it with all that may benefit him in it. And since he had reminded them of their resorting to the obligatory, he followed it with the recommended, indicating that they have no reliance on the world nor trust in it. They have combined the nobility of character with loyalty and the tenderness of heart with the honor of the soul by detaching from the transient. He said: ﴿And they give food﴾, meaning according to what is available to them from high and low consistently. And when a person may give what does not please him, he said: ﴿Out of love for Him﴾, meaning their love for Him is a love that is at the utmost of their ability and transcends their hearts due to its scarcity and their desires for it, as He, the Most High, said: ﴿You will not attain righteousness until you spend from that which you love﴾ [Al-Imran: 92], to understand that they are more generous in giving for virtue. For this reason, the Prophet ﷺ said: "If one of you were to spend like Uhud in gold, he would not reach a handful of any of them, meaning the companions, may Allah be pleased with them - nor half of it," due to the scarcity of what was available at that time and its abundance. After ﴿a needy person﴾, meaning one who is in slight need, the one who has great need is more deserving. ﴿And an orphan﴾, meaning a small one without a father, whether male or female. ﴿And a captive﴾, meaning in the hands of the disbelievers, meaning it is more general than that. It includes the owned, the imprisoned, and the disbeliever who is in the hands of the Muslims. It has been reported in the Battle of Badr that some of the companions, may Allah be pleased with them, preferred their captive over themselves with bread, and bread was scarce at that time, to the extent that the captive was amazed by their generosity, which led him to Islam. This is because when the Prophet ﷺ sent them to him, he said: "Treat them well." And among the rulings regarding the true captive is that every harmed person does that while they say with the tongue of their state or their words if they are in need of it, removing the illusion of favor or expecting a reward, confirming the indication that sincerity is a rare matter that hardly anyone believes can be achieved by anyone.
