Commentary

And when he mentioned their reward for their righteousness, which is clear for their gratitude, he followed it with a detailed explanation, saying, beginning a clarification that their gratitude is by glorifying the command of Allah, showing compassion towards the creation of Allah, and cultivating the outward and inward, as they combined between the generosity of nature and the gentleness of the disposition that leads to the acceptance of the possible, which necessitates belief in the unseen: ﴿They fulfill﴾ meaning in a manner of continuity ﴿the vow﴾ and this is a metaphor for their fulfillment in all aspects of worship, for whoever fulfills what he has obligated upon himself is fulfilling what Allah has obligated without intermediary, and it is permissible that the vows are all that has been presented to them in it, glorified and exalted is He.

And when their fulfillment indicated the soundness of their natures, he said, adding a statement indicating their gathering of the two interrelated matters, for they perform the fulfillment not out of fear but out of the generosity of their nature: ﴿And they fear﴾ meaning along with their performing of the obligatory acts ﴿a day that﴾ meaning a being that is in (p-138) its essence ﴿its evil﴾ meaning what is in it of hardships ﴿is spreading﴾ meaning the existence of flying in existence as if it is with the utmost desire for it, for it is in the utmost of spread, and fear is the clearest evidence of the cultivation of the inward. They said: And what fear has not departed from a heart except that it has been destroyed. Whoever fears sets out, and whoever sets out reaches the destination. Thus, fear is for avoiding evil, and fulfillment is for attracting good.
