Commentary
And when it became established that among the people are those who have abandoned the guidance, which is the clarification, and have become blind to it due to their turning away from it, He caused this descent and that misguidance by His saying, alerting to the diseases of the hearts, and guiding to their remedies: ﴿So be patient for the judgment of your Lord﴾, meaning the One who is gracious to you by His specification of you with this blessing over the misguidance of those who have judged by their misguidance, and over all that befalls you. [And obey Him -] in worshiping Him with all that He has commanded you of kindness until He commands you with the sword. And seek help in the bitterness of patience by recalling that the nurturing, compassionate One nurtures with whatever He wills of bitterness and sweetness according to His knowledge and wisdom. Patience is the restraint of the soul and its control over resisting desires so that it does not yield to anything of the abominations of pleasures.
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, commanded him to be patient, and the command to it implies its existence for the opposers, and those who oppose him, blessings and peace be upon him, are the opposing faction to the grateful ones, and they are the disbelievers. What they call him to is at times pure sin, at other times disbelief, and at times something other than that. He mentioned the outcome, prohibiting the first two categories to make it known that there is no prohibition in what is omitted. So He said: ﴿And do not obey any of them﴾, meaning the disbelievers who are against the grateful ones. ﴿Sinful﴾, meaning calling to sin, whether it is purely devoid of absolute disbelief or accompanied by it. ﴿Or ungrateful﴾, meaning excessive in disbelief and calling to it, even if it is great and immense in this world, for the truth is greater than every great thing. (p-155) And that is because they, despite the severity of the harm against him, blessings and peace be upon him, would offer him desires from wealth, ownership, and marrying their greatest women on the condition that he would follow them in their religion and refrain from what he is upon. And the prohibition of the ambiguous one is a prohibition of each of them, for each of them must be avoided in the same rank. ﴿And avoid the outward sin and the inward﴾ [Al-An'am: 120]. And likewise, the cessation from it cannot be achieved except by ceasing from each of them. And if he had connected with a 'wa' (and), it would not have been beneficial, for the negation of the two does not necessitate the negation of each of them. And he understood the arrangement of the prohibition on the two descriptions that if the disbelievers call him to what does not relate to him in sin or disbelief, it is permissible for him to accept it.
