Commentary

And when he mentioned that He sufficed them from the frightening and granted them Paradise, he followed that with their state in it and its state, saying, indicating their eternal comfort: ﴿Reclining therein﴾ meaning, [because] everything they desire is present to them without any need for movement at all. And he indicated the king by his saying ﴿upon thrones﴾ meaning the high beds that are in the canopies. There cannot be a throne except with the presence of the canopy. [And] some of them said: it is the bed that is adorned in a dome upon which are its furnishings, and it is an indication of the wives because the custom is that the thrones do not lack them; rather, they are for them for the enjoyment of their husbands with them in it. And when the houses of this world and its gardens require moving from one place to another due to heat or cold, it is between the fact that all the land of Paradise and its chambers are equal in the pleasure of living, the abundance of shade, and the moderation of the matter. So he said, negating the harm of heat and then cold: ﴿They will not see therein﴾ meaning with their eyes nor with their insight at all ﴿the sun﴾ meaning nor the moon ﴿nor﴾ meaning nor will they see therein also with their insight, meaning they will not feel what is called ﴿intense cold﴾ meaning a severe, disturbing cold nor heat. The verse is from the interlocking: it indicates by the negation of the sun first to the negation of the moon, because its appearance therein is because its light is derived from the light of the sun. And it indicates by the negation of the intense cold, which is the cause of the cold, secondly to the negation of the heat caused by the sun. This implies that Paradise is free from the two lights, for it is illuminated by itself and its inhabitants do not need to know the time because there is no obligation in it in any way. And it is shaded and always moderate because the cause of heat now is the proximity of the sun to the heads of the people, and the cause of cold after that.
