And when souls are inclined towards the love of reward and praise, it is hardly believable that anyone would do something without intending any of that. And Allah, glorified and exalted is He, has bestowed upon us that He made worship for the sake of fearing Him and hoping for Him, which does not detract from sincerity. They justified their saying this in the form of emphasis by saying: ﴿Indeed, we fear﴾. And since fear of the Benefactor, when considering His benefaction, necessitates fear of Him when considering His might, power, and authority, they said: ﴿From our Lord﴾, meaning the Creator for us [the Benefactor towards us -] ﴿A Day﴾, meaning the horrors of a day that is - of the utmost greatness. They clarified its greatness by saying: ﴿Frowning﴾, meaning narrow - this was said by Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him. They attributed the frowning to Him because in His severity, He is like an angry lion, thus it necessitates the frowning of faces in it or [it is -] for the frowning of its people like “His night is standing and His day is fasting and a contented life.” ﴿Severe﴾, meaning long - this was said by Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, or extremely frowning, gathering evil like that which gathers [what -] between His eyes - taken from the word qatr, for His day will be frowning, and the letter mīm was added to it and it was exaggerated in its form. And it is the Day of Resurrection. It is said: 'It has become qamṭar today, so it is muqamṭar - if it is difficult and severe.
