Commentary
And when it has been established what indicates that the Day of Resurrection is in the utmost manifestation, he turned away from this denial and said, building on what he estimates: He does not consider the absence of that, for it is from the manifestations in a way that does not require much contemplation. If he were to walk with his intellect, he would know the truth: ﴿But he wants﴾, meaning he brings about the will. ﴿The human﴾ has manifested in the place of concealment to clarify the generality due to the nature that necessitates the absence of thought about the other, despite its strong manifestation, for he is concerned with his desires. There is no salvation except by the protection of Allah, glorified and exalted is He. He omitted the object of 'wants' as an indication that everything he wants according to his nature and desires is outside of his capacity, so he is punished for it because he is a servant. The servant must be observant of the master, wanting only what he is commanded to do. If he wants what he has been commanded, no will is attributed to him, rather the will belongs to the master, not to him.
And when that is the case, and his will that is outside of the command is a disobedience, he said, explaining: ﴿To let him commit sin before him﴾, meaning that the will occurs from him so that sin occurs from him in the future of his time by fulfilling his desires and proceeding, riding on his passions. His deceitful soul brings to him wishes and expands for him in hope, making him covetous of pardon without action. Al-Hasan said: The believer is only seen blaming himself [and saying: What did I intend with my words? What did I intend with my eating? And the wicked proceeds forward without holding himself accountable] and does not reproach it. It is permissible that the pronoun refers to Allah, glorified and exalted is He, so the meaning would be: To commit sin before Allah, glorified and exalted is He, and in His sight and hearing, and he hopes that he will not be held accountable for that or be punished for his sin. He said in the dictionary: Sin is the emergence in disobedience and fornication like sin.
