Commentary
And when he mentioned his aversion to the Hereafter, he stated that its cause is his corruption of what Allah has granted him of the powers of knowledge and action by neglecting them from good and using them for evil. He said, clarifying the action of the obedient servant and the runaway, referring to ﴿He asks when﴾ [Al-Qiyamah: 6], which means he denied resurrection: ﴿So he did not believe﴾ - meaning this human [about whom the speech is -] the Messenger in what he informed him of what he used to do of vile deeds, nor his belief in spending in the paths of good that he was urged to, whether obligatory or recommended. The object was omitted because it is more effective in generalization.
And when he mentioned the essence of the religion, he followed it with its branches as a sign that the disbeliever is addressed by them. He said: ﴿And he did not pray﴾ meaning what he commanded of obligatory and non-obligatory acts, so he does not hold onto the rope of the Creator nor does he reach the rope of the created beings according to what was legislated.
