And when the family of the deceased becomes increasingly distressed at that time, and their demand for what saves the dying person intensifies without that benefiting them at all, their saying is as if there is no one to say it specifically. The saying: ﴿And it was said﴾ is built for the passive, meaning: from every speaker who finds it difficult to ask the deceased a question of exclusion: ﴿Who can cure?﴾ meaning: who is the one that possesses a firm standing in the matter of the healing incantations to recite for him and save him from what he is in? For he has reached a state in which no medicine can be tolerated, so there is no hope except in the incantations. And from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, that this saying is from some of the angels questioning about who would elevate his spirit to the heavens: Is it the angels of mercy or the angels of punishment? The former is the active participle from رقى meaning to cure, with the opening in the past tense and the kasra in the present tense, and the latter means to ascend, with the kasra in both the past and present tenses.
