He said: "And faces on that Day" meaning on that very day, "will be gloomy" meaning severe in frowning and scowling and distaste for what they are in of grief, as if they have drowned in it and have sunk after having examined their conditions, and no way of salvation has appeared to them. The term 'gloomy' is more expressive than 'frowning', but it has prevailed in the context of bravery due to the intensity of their scowl in battle. And those faces are veiled from their Lord, and they are looking towards the types of punishment.
