Commentary
And when it was established and known that it is at the utmost limits of manifestation that whoever the king seeks [seeks -] a display and an account [and reward -] and punishment blames himself for not having exerted himself in the actions that please the king and in sincerity in his allegiance to him, and in siding with him and greeting him. The most blame of the self was occurring on that day. The self's perception of the blame that is contingent upon the understanding of the universal and particular matters, and the knowledge of good and evil, and the distinction between them is one of the greatest signs of the completeness of the Creator's power and the perfection of His greatness, which necessitates the existence of that day (p-86) to manifest His greatness and [His judgment and -] wisdom. He said, "And I swear by the self" in accordance with what has passed regarding [that -] the 'ba' is a connection or a cause. "The blaming self" means that which blames its owner, and it is both good and evil. The good one becomes a cause for salvation therein, while the other [becomes -] a cause for destruction therein. If it blames for evil or for negligence in good, it saves, and if it blames for the opposite of that, it destroys. However it is, it must blame, and it is [between -] the commanding self and the tranquil self. Whatever prevails over it from either of them, it is in its domain. Al-Razi said in the Luminaries: The tranquil one is that which submits to the commands of Allah, and the commanding one is that which opposes it and follows desire. The blaming one is the one that struggles; sometimes it has the upper hand, and sometimes it is overcome. It is the self of the human being, especially because it is between the states of good and evil, perfection and deficiency, ascent and descent, obedience and disobedience. Imam al-Suhrawardi said in the fifty-sixth chapter of his knowledge: It is a single self with differing attributes. The angels are at the degree of perfection, and other animals are at the degree of deficiency. For this reason, He combined between the Day of Resurrection and [the -] blaming self, because the reward and punishment are for humans, not for angels (p-87) and mute animals. The blaming self intensifies its blame on that day for the lack of good or the lack of increase from it. I do not swear upon that by this which is among the clearest matters of His greatness, glorified is He, for the matter in that is independent of the oath.
