Commentary
And when a person excuses himself on that Day for all the evil of his deeds, and argues in the greatest argument, the one who argues usually thinks that he has not sinned or does not know of any sin for himself. He said: "And if he throws" meaning he mentions with utmost speed that person without stammering, indicating utmost truthfulness, concern, and flattery. "His excuses" means every word that he can use to save himself, the plural of excuse or justification, which is the effort to push away the flaw. And it was said in the dictionary: the excuses are (p-97) the coverings and the arguments, the plural of excuse, and that is due to their commonality in the general concept of covering, with the opening and the breaking in covering the sinner and the argument in covering the sin. The meaning is that it is an argument against himself, and if he argues about it and strives to cover his flaws, the excuses will not be accepted from him. This is because he has been given insight but has blinded it by the ease of the soul and its desires. And that insight is the light of knowledge rooted in the original nature, and it is like His saying, glorified and exalted is He: "The excuses of the wrongdoers will not benefit them." [Ghafir: 52]
