And when he began with one of the reasons for acceptance, he followed it with the second that distances one from the destruction of action due to admiration, showing off, and boredom. He said: "And do not bestow favor" [meaning] upon anyone by your supplication for him or by something you give him as a gift or a loan, by cutting off the pleasure of the one you have done good to by burdening him with your mention of it in a way of superiority and seeking more of what you have done with him. Or do not give anything while you are "seeking more" meaning requesting to be given a reward or more than what you have given - this was said by Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, and it is from their saying, that when one gives, it is more appropriate for the giver among creation to regard what he has given as little and to thank Allah who has enabled him to do so. And for the receiver to seek more of what he has taken. The Prophet ﷺ was commanded not to do anything for a reason at all, but rather for Allah alone. For when the seeking for more is removed, sincerity is attained, because his concern does not attach itself to seeking to be rewarded. How much less to regard it as something little, so the action becomes in the utmost purity, not intended for a reward at all, nor sought for other than the face of Allah, glorified and exalted is He. And this is the ultimate in sincerity.
