Commentary
And when the answer was certainly: they have nothing in their turning away, he turned away from it with his saying: "Rather, he wants". This is regarding their claims and their assertion that "every person among them" refers to those who are turning away, along with their claim of perfection in manliness. "To be brought" means from the heavens, which he built for the action; because their intention is known: "written pages" means papers that are written. "Spread out" means very many, and each one of them is spread out, with no barrier to reading it and taking it. This is because they said to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him: "We will not follow you until you bring each one of us a book from the heavens in it: from Allah to so-and-so, follow Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him."
