Commentary

And when the Day of Resurrection is in extreme difficulty and one is preoccupied with himself, he has no knowledge of the details of what befalls others. The allies of Allah, when they enter His abode of honor, desire knowledge of what He has done to their enemies, glorified and exalted is He. They ask about their state, and some of them say to one another: We have no knowledge. Then Allah revealed to them about them until they saw them in the Fire, which is being fueled by them, so that Allah may bring joy to their eyes with their punishment, as an increase in their bliss and reward, as previously mentioned in As-Saffat at His saying: "A speaker among them said, Indeed, I had a companion" [As-Saffat: 51]. And the context of the speech indicates all of this. He, glorified and exalted is He, pointed us to it by saying, narrating what their allies say to them as a reprimand and rebuke, and as a source of gloating and scolding, confirming His saying, the Most High: "So today the believers will laugh at the disbelievers" [Al-Mutaffifin: 34]. And for that narration to be a lesson for the listeners and a reminder for the ones who remember: "What" is open to reprimand and astonishment. "He has led you" means He has admitted you, O criminals, in a manner that is extremely constricted, as if you are the thread in the needle's eye. "In Sakar". This address implies that when they asked, they denied knowledge of themselves. It is known that the denial of knowledge is because they were preoccupied with themselves, and they were not preoccupied - despite being among the people of happiness - except because that day is one of great distractions. It is known that if they could not know the state of those from the people of Paradise and they do not seek intercession for them, then there remains no way for them to know that, except by questioning them about themselves, so that they address them with that and they learn their knowledge to increase their joy and happiness for what Allah has saved them from, like their state, and to increase their praise of Allah, the Most High, for what He has granted them. And for that to be a lesson for us by hearing it, Allah narrated that when they asked them.
