Commentary
And when its confinement to remembrance might suggest a deficiency in its matter, which could lead some of the obstinate to doubt its greatness and that it has no reality or punishment in it, He said, warning against that and alerting to readiness and caution with the word of deterrence and reminder: ﴿Kalla﴾, meaning beware not to doubt its horrors and the greatness of its matter and its states and terrors, for the matter is more profound and greater than what comes to mind. So let the listener take heed and refrain.
And when He confined its matter to remembrance and denied that any deficiency should be thought of it, He emphasized the speech as a reference to what most of the addressed have of doubt and deviation, awakening them from their state of heedlessness and softening what they have of blame and density, and alerting them to strive in rectifying themselves with what they utilize of the remedies that He, glorified and exalted is He, guides them to for treating the diseases of the hearts with it. The matter was further emphasized, so He swore by that which is a reminder for people, and the darkness of night does not appear with it, just as the light of the Qur'an does not appear with the darkness of ignorance for whoever employs the eye of his thought and casts aside the whims of his soul. And He said: ﴿And the moon﴾ [meaning that it is] a sign of the night, guiding for whoever has gone astray in its darkness.
