Commentary
And when the warning involves confronting people with what they dislike, this is great for a human. The one who refrains from following the caller has one of two matters: either abandoning what he is commanded to do, or seeking a reward from him. Just as the reason for following him is his action in what he called to, and his distance from seeking a reward for it, his matter is to glorify the One who sent him, glorified and exalted is He. For when he glorifies the right of His glorification, everything becomes small before Him. Thus, the call becomes easy for him and it helps him in acceptance. He said: "And your Lord" meaning the One who nurtures you specifically, "so glorify" meaning rise up and let your standing with utmost seriousness and diligence cause you to describe Him alone with greatness in words and belief in every situation. This is to declare Him free from associating partners with Him above all else, and likewise from everything that is not befitting of Him, such as connection and separation, and asking others, and being preoccupied with anything other than Him.
[And - ] Imam Abu Ja'far ibn al-Zubair said: Its suitability to Surah Al-Muzzammil is clear, and the opening of both surahs is of the same type. What each one begins with is from the noble address of him, blessings and peace be upon him, and the great honoring of him: "O you who wraps himself" [Al-Muzzammil: 1] "O you who covers himself" [Al-Muddathir: 1]. The command in both is regarding what concerns him: "Stand the night except for a little" [Al-Muzzammil: 2] "Half of it" [Al-Muzzammil: 3] the verses, and in the other: "Rise and warn" [Al-Muddathir: 2] "And your Lord, so glorify" followed in the first by His saying: "And be patient over what they say" [Al-Muzzammil: 10] and in the second by His saying: "And for your Lord, be patient" [Al-Muddathir: 7]. All of this is one intent, and he followed his command with patience in the wrapping with the threat to the disbelievers and their warning: "And leave Me with the deniers" [Al-Muzzammil: 11] the verses, and likewise in the other: "Leave Me and the one I created alone" [Al-Muddathir: 11] the verses. Thus, the two surahs are presented in one context and a unified intent - ended.
