And when the change in a person's condition is to a state less than what he is upon, it is a painful distress for him. This change alters his color because the outward appearance is the title of the inward state. Allah, the Most High, indicated the severity of its effect in this matter by saying: "Lawaḥah" meaning severe change with blackness, blueness, brightness, and disturbance, [and thirst and similar things -] from the corruption due to the intensity of its heat. The Arabs say: The fire "lāḥat" the thing - if it burned it and blackened it. "For mankind" meaning for people or for their skins, the plural of basharah and the plural of bashar are abshār.
