Commentary

And when the listener may be one who is reported from Allah, this necessitates for him a desire for it. He said without a conjunction, like the one clarifying the first and affirming it. He presented it in the form of emphasis by restriction, knowing that every person of insight denies his words: 'Indeed, this is nothing but the saying of humans.' That is, there is nothing in it from Allah, so let no one be deceived by it or ascend to it. He has praised it with this blame after all this contemplation, in that he has established that it is impossible for most people, just as they are unable to perform magic. Thus, he remained silent for a thousand and spoke in response, so he was similar in some respects to what some of them said:

If it were said, 'How many are five and five?' He would rise one day and night, counting and calculating.

And he says, 'The matter of her is a perplexing mystery, And if I am astonished by it, my matter is more astonishing.'

Until when his hands were numbed and his eyes were blurred From what he may write and inscribe.

He stood on a high place and said, 'Look!' And he was nearly driven mad with joy and was bewildered.

Five and five are six or seven; These are two sayings, said by Al-Khalil and Tha'lab.

And thus every truth finds that the one who exaggerates in its condemnation does not cease his condemnation from implying praise for it. This contradicts his words. However, where are the critics counted among the individuals among the servants? This saying is valid for all whom He has created, glorified and exalted is He. Thus, in the evasion of the truth for what Allah has favored him with in leadership, for the people of greatness in this world are often those who stand in denial of the truth and pride themselves over its people, as mentioned here. This does not contradict what they said: that it was revealed concerning al-Walid ibn al-Mughira al-Makhzumi. Rather, that is part of the miraculous nature of Allah's words that a verse descends about a person, clarifying his condition to the utmost clarity, and that clarification encompasses others. They said: This al-Walid had ten sons, each one of them a leader of a tribe, and they had slaves who traveled in their trades and fulfilled their needs, and they did not require them to leave the city for trade or anything else. Three of them embraced Islam: al-Walid ibn al-Walid, Khalid, and Hisham. It was said that when the first part of Surah Ghafir was revealed to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, up to His saying: "the destination" [Ghafir: 3], or the beginning of "Fussilat," the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, recited it in the mosque while al-Walid was listening to him. He repeated the recitation and then al-Walid went until he reached the gathering of his people, the Banu Makhzum. By Allah, I have heard from Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, words that are neither the words of humans nor the words of jinn. Indeed, it has sweetness, and upon it is a freshness. Its top is fruitful, and its bottom is abundant. Indeed, it rises and is not surpassed. Then he turned away. The Quraysh said: By Allah, al-Walid has inclined. By Allah, you will all incline, Quraysh. He was called the flower of Quraysh. So, his nephew Abu Jahl said: I will take care of him for you. He sat next to al-Walid, feeling sad. Al-Walid said: Why do I see you sad, O my nephew? He said: What prevents me when this Quraysh gathers for you a fund to assist you in your old age and claims that you have inclined, to enter upon the son of Abu Kabsha and the son of Abu Quhafa to gain from their abundant food? Al-Walid became angry and said: Does Quraysh not know that I am one of its wealthiest and have the most children? And has Muhammad and his companions ever filled themselves with food so that they would have an abundance? Then he stood up with Abu Jahl until he went to the gathering of his people and they discussed what they would say about the Qur'an. They said to him: What do you say about this [what] Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, has brought? He said: Say, I hear you. They said: It is poetry. He said: It is not poetry; we have known all poetry. In another narration: Have you seen him engaging in poetry? They said: It is sorcery. He said: It is not sorcery; have you seen him practicing sorcery? They counted the types of falsehood they attributed to the Qur'an and he refuted them, establishing evidence against them. He said: Do not say anything of that unless I know that it is a lie. They said: Then say, and establish for us an opinion upon which we can unite. He said: The closest to that is magic; it separates between a man and his father, between a man and his wife, and between a man and his tribe. So they parted on that. His saying was the cause of his destruction, as some of them said.

Guard your tongue, O human. Do not let it sting you; it is a snake. How many in the graves are victims of their tongues? The brave used to fear meeting them.
