Commentary

So he said, following what his wicked nature led him to, regarding the arrogance he displayed in this manner, because he saw it beneficial for them in this world and did not think about the consequence of that from the perspective of Allah. And that He, glorified and exalted is He, does not guide the plot of the treacherous nor does the intention of the liars succeed. This is similar to what they have experienced in their worldly affairs. So how could he elevate his view to the matter of the Hereafter? He confirmed the words for what he knows of the denial of those who hear him, so he said: 'Indeed, what is this' meaning 'that which Muhammad has brought' except magic, meaning illusory matters that have no realities, and they are so subtle that their causes are hidden. And when it was known to them that Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, was never bewitched nor did he know magic, whoever claimed that was known to be lying with the slightest examination after the matter, according to his ability. So he said: 'It is reported,' meaning it is of his nature to be conveyed by the listener from others. This is due to the strength of its magical nature and its excessiveness in its domain, which separates by mere narration between a man and his wife, and between a man and his father, and son, and other wonders that arise from it.
