Commentary
And when he was in a state of covering himself, he had remained in one place, so it necessitated the concealment of his noble self. He was commanded by him ﷺ to stand up, and the warning was caused by indicating that what is intended by it is that he would be the most famous of creation with the general message, which requires rolling up the garment and striving with the utmost seriousness and necessary effort. The abundance of spreading is contrary to covering in every respect. So he said: ﴿Stand﴾, meaning an absolute standing, especially from the place of your covering, with utmost determination and seriousness. And when the matter was at the time of the revelation of this surah, and the people were engulfed in corruption, one of the describers of the message mentioned the intensity of the need for it, saying, causing him to stand: ﴿So warn﴾, meaning do the warning for everyone who can be warned. So he warned those who were asleep in their heedlessness, covered in the garments of their intoxication, oblivious to the horrors of the Day of Resurrection. Likewise, he warned those who were awake but were covered in the garments of their distractions and veils of their forgetfulness. For it is obligatory upon every one who is nurtured to thank his Lord, otherwise He will punish him for his stubbornness against Him or his heedlessness of Him, at the very least by turning away from him. And he omitted the object to indicate the generality of the warning for everyone from whom opposition is possible by reason, and they are all of creation. This is because he ﷺ was visited by Gabriel, peace be upon him, with ﴿Read in the name of your Lord﴾ [Al-'Alaq: 1] and similar verses, so by that he was a prophet. Then this verse was revealed to him, so he became a messenger. This is because he was called while he was on the mountain of Hira. When he heard the voice, he looked to the right and to the left but saw nothing. He raised his head, and there was Gabriel, blessings and peace be upon him, sitting on a throne between the heavens and the earth. He was greatly terrified by that. So he hastened to return to the house, trembling, and said: "Cover me, cover me, I fear for myself, pour cold water over me."
