Commentary

And when he had done that, glorified and exalted is He, I bestowed upon him this blessing of arrogance and pride against the one who granted it to him, contrary to what should have been for him of gratitude and restraint. He said, confirming that he, glorified and exalted is He, is the one who granted it to him and He is the One, the Subduer. Indicating by the tool of delay to the improbability of an increase for him in this state of his from lack of gratitude: ﴿Then﴾ meaning after the great matter he committed of denying our Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, ﴿he hopes﴾ meaning without a reason he presents to us from what We made a cause for the increase of gratitude: ﴿that I may increase﴾ meaning in what I have given him of his worldly life or his Hereafter while he denies My Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him.
