Commentary

And when the determination was: so he exerted himself in the night prayer, he added to it his saying urging to the presence of thought: ﴿And remember the name of your Lord﴾, meaning the Benefactor to you, the Creator, and the Planner for you with all that is mentioned of name, attribute, praise, submission, glorification, and prayer, and recitation, and supplication, and turning towards religious knowledge and observed etiquette, and blood upon that. So when you glorify the name with remembrance, you have indeed glorified the named with the Oneness and sincerity, and that is assistance for you in the interests of both abodes. As for the Hereafter, it is clear, and as for this world, the Prophet ﷺ, the most honored of creation to him, guided his daughter Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, when she asked him for a servant to spare her the fatigue to glorification, praise, and magnification at the time of sleep.

And when the remembrance may be with attachment to others, he informed that the one who remembers in reality is the one who is engrossed in Him, glorified and exalted is He, and by Him is the completion of assistance. So he said: ﴿And devote yourself﴾, meaning strive to cut yourself off from every distraction, and to be sincere in all of your actions gradually, little by little, ending: ﴿to Him﴾, and do not cease upon that until it becomes a creation for you, so your soul would be as if it is cut off without a cutter and cut off many times by every cutter. So the determination is - by what the source has guided to “devotion” and “devote yourself” ﴿devotion﴾, and he informed with certainty by the guiding source to the combination between the act of devotion and the act of cutting with great concern and difficulty of the station, and it is from cutting, which is severance. The charity of severance is something cut off from its owner. And for this reason, Zayd ibn Aslam said: devotion is the rejection of this world and what is in it, and seeking what is with Allah, the Exalted. And the one who is devoted is Maryam, peace be upon her, for her severance to Allah, the Exalted, from all of His creation. Likewise, Fatimah az-Zahra, the devoted one, also for her severance from a companion and an equal and a counterpart. So the intended meaning (p-15) by this is the intended meaning of the word of Oneness, which necessitates turning to Him and turning away from all else. And that is by adhering to remembrance and shedding desires, and the verse is from the intertwining, which is evident: the mention of the act of devotion is evidence of the omission of its source, and the mention of the source of cutting is evidence of the omission of its act.
