And when He, glorified and exalted is He, clarified from the beginning of the Surah to here what brings about the righteousness of the religion, which the command has protected, and what brings about the righteousness of both abodes. He made evident the virtues of night prayer. So the decree was certainly: he should persist in it to attain these fruits. He said, clarifying and affirming it, explaining what brings about the righteousness of this world, which is in it the livelihood, and its righteousness is a means to the righteousness of the intended goal, which is the religion. This is what he should aim for so that he does not become a burden on the people to obtain from the provision what helps him in his religion, and he expands it for the dependents of Allah without fatigue, nor annoyance, nor laziness, nor exaggeration. He affirmed what the soul has of laziness regarding it: "Indeed, for you" meaning, O you who prays at night, or O most honorable of the servants, if the address is to the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, to be more emphatic in obligating the nation regarding it, "during the day" which is the time for striving in the interests of this world.
And when a person is concerned in his striving for himself, until he is as if due to the intensity of his determination and the speed of his movement, like a swimmer in what has no obstacle for him, He said: "Swimming for a long time" meaning, a prolonged movement in time. Al-Baghawi said: The origin of swimming is the speed of going. Al-Razi said: The ease of movement.
