Commentary
And when he understood this, that the night prayer is of the utmost greatness, he confirmed that by urging not to be content without the best, most beautiful, and most complete by saying: confirming that the matter of standing is light upon the soul: ﴿Indeed, the rising at night﴾ means its hours, each one of which is a rising, and worship arises in it with utmost lightness. Whoever rises, meaning he stands up from his bed with utmost energy due to the strength of his resolve and the brightness of his determination, which you made as if it arose by itself. Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: What is after the evening prayer is a rising, and what is before it is not a rising. Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: The rising is the standing after sleep. Al-Azhari said: The rising is the standing, a source that came in the form of a participle like 'the healer' meaning the act of healing.
And when that is of utmost difficulty due to its strong opposition to nature, he increased in emphasis by encouraging it, saying: ﴿It is﴾ meaning it is special for what it has of advantages ﴿more intense﴾ meaning heavier, stronger, firmer, and more solid ﴿and more burdensome﴾ meaning with the hardship and difficulty due to what is in it of leaving comfort and parting from familiarity and beloved ones, and more steadfast of foot - although it is a source and was read in the congregation - with a فتح then سكون, and a correspondence between the heart and the tongue in presence and in adherence to the religion with submission and humility, although it is a source and corresponds like 'the killer' in the reading of Abu Amr and Ibn Amer with a كسرة and a مدّ. It is more eloquent because the form of مفاعلة is between two who struggle, so the action becomes stronger.
And when the night prayer combines saying and action, and between what is in the action because it is more difficult, it was more rightful to begin with encouragement through praise. He followed that with the saying: ﴿And more upright in speech﴾ meaning and greater in correctness from the aspect of the saying in its understanding and its impact in the hearts with the presence of the heart and the tranquility of the night with the calmness of voices, and it glorifies the Lord, glorified and exalted is He, with the attainment of blessings, and it is purer from hypocrisy and base intentions.
