Commentary
And when the intention behind him ﷺ was the steadfastness for prophethood, and for his nation the steadfastness in following him in action, command, and prohibition, and that was extremely difficult, and man is incapable except by the assistance of his Lord, and the beneficial help is only for the one whose soul is purified from impurities and illuminated with lights, and that is only achieved by striving in His service, glorified and exalted is He. He explained this matter by saying, clarifying for the Quran which He commanded to be recited what it is and how He described it, informing that the night prayer is considered for the soul as a strength by which it deals with difficulties, affirming that the coming with what is outside of all forms of speech is hardly believable: ﴿Indeed﴾ meaning by what we have of greatness ﴿We will cast﴾ meaning soon with a promise that there is no breaking of it, so prepare for that with what is rightfully due to it.
And when the position was to clarify the difficulty, he expressed it with the tool of elevation, saying: ﴿Upon you﴾ and indicated to ease with that, referring to "And We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember, so is there any who will remember?" by expressing in a manner that revolves around ease and lightness. He said: ﴿A saying﴾ meaning the Quran ﴿Heavy﴾ meaning for what it contains of burdensome obligations from the aspect of carrying them and imposing them on those being called, as they contradict nature and oppose the soul, and from the aspect of the gravity of its wording due to its fullness with meanings along with the grandeur of its significance and its rising in obscurity, so the contemplator does not understand it and extracts from it the jewels except with more thought, purification of the secret, and clarity of vision. Thus, it is heavy upon the one who agrees from all these aspects and others, and upon the one who opposes from the aspect that he cannot refute it nor can he manage to criticize it in any way, even though it is heavy in the balance and at the time of receiving it, and it has weight, danger, and great value. It has been narrated in the authentic reports: "Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ would, when revelation came to him, separate from it, and his forehead would sweat on a cold day of extreme cold, and when revelation descended upon him while he was riding his she-camel, it would kneel down and hardly move until it would be relieved from him." Al-Qushayri said: It has been narrated from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, "That Surah Al-An'am was revealed to him all at once while he was riding, and his she-camel knelt down from the weight of the Quran and its awe." And despite its heaviness on the pillars, it is light on the tongue, easy to recite and memorize for a person.
