Commentary
﴿Or add to it﴾ meaning a little to the half, like a sixth for example. So the one that you establish would be two-thirds for example. And in every estimation of these estimations, it coincides with the standing - and it is only after sleep: the time which Allah blesses with the manifestation [in it -] for it has been confirmed that He descends, glorified and exalted is He, [from -] that He resembles His essence to anything (p-8) or His descent is the descent of another [rather -] it is a metaphor for the opening of the gate of heaven, which is a metaphor for the time of the acceptance of supplication - when a third of the night remains - and in a narration: when half of the other half of the night remains - to the lowest heaven, and He says: Is there anyone asking that I may give him? Is there anyone repenting that I may turn to him? Is there anyone such and such until dawn rises. This standing was obligatory upon them at the beginning of Islam, with the choice among these three estimations, so they made it difficult for themselves. The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, would stand until morning out of fear that he would not preserve the required amount, and likewise some of his companions, may Allah be pleased with them, and this became severe upon them until their feet swelled. This was before the obligation of the fifth, and its last part was revealed with ease after a year ﴿He knew that you would not be able to do it﴾ [Al-Muzzammil: 20] the verses, so the standing of the night became voluntary after an obligation.
And when he was commanded to stand and the time was determined and specified, he commanded the manner of recitation in a general way for the day, indicating that the standing in prayer, whose spirit is the Qur'an, is to say: ﴿And recite the Qur'an﴾ meaning read it with deliberation [and -] between its letters in such a way that the listener can count them [and -] until the recited resembles the mouth of one who recites, which is the one who is clear and compared to the light of the daisy, for that is necessary for contemplation, so it reveals to him his important matters and uncovers for him its secrets and hidden things. Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said: (p-9) And do not scatter it like the scattering of grain, nor rush through it like poetry, but pause at its wonders and move the hearts with it, and let none of you be the last of the surah. Al-Tirmidhi narrated from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, that "the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, stood until morning with a verse, and the verse is ﴿If You punish them, they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise﴾ [Al-Ma'idah: 118] " And when He, glorified and exalted is He, informed about the recitation, He informed about its honor with emphasis by the source, and He said: ﴿In a measured tone﴾.
