Commentary
﴿Stand﴾ that is, in our service by bearing the burdens of our Prophethood and striving in endurance. And leave off being wrapped up, for it is contrary to standing.
And when striving in service indicates the utmost love, and intention is better than action, and man is created weak, and He, glorified and exalted is He, is gentle with this nation as an honor for its Imam ﷺ, He is pleased with us, glorified is He, for the sincerity of our intention towards action and made our rewards greater than our deeds. He made the revival of some a revival for all, so He named the whole while intending the part, and said: ﴿the night﴾ that is, the time of solitude, secrecy, and concealment. So pray for us every night of this kind and stand before us with supplication and companionship with what We have revealed to you of Our words, for we wish to manifest you and elevate your status in land and sea, in secret and openly. And the standing of the night in the law means prayer, and therefore it was not restricted. It encompasses all types of apparent and hidden deeds, and it is its foundation; mentioning it indicates what is besides it.
And when the body has a share in rest, He said, excluding from the night: ﴿except a little﴾ that is, from every night. And this call was made because when the revelation came to him in the Cave of Hira, he returned to his wife Khadijah, may Allah be pleased with her, with his heart trembling and said: "Wrap me up, wrap me up! I have feared for myself." She, may Allah be pleased with her, asked him about his state, and when he told her his affair, he said: "I feared for myself," meaning that this might be the beginning of poetry or divination, and all of that is from the devils, and that which appeared to him in revelation is not an angel. And he, blessings and peace be upon him, hated poetry and divination to the utmost degree. She said to him, and she was a minister of truth: "No, by Allah! Allah will never disgrace you. Indeed, you maintain the ties of kinship, honor the guest, bear the burdens, and assist in the affairs of truth." And similar to this is the saying that reassures. And the benefit of being wrapped is that the complete brave man, when faced with a matter that is beyond his strength, his affair becomes scattered, so he returns to himself, and his sight and insight are limited to his senses. His powers gather to him, so his righteous nature becomes strong against those deceptive ailments, and it defeats them, and he returns to the matter of the noble nature, and what was presented from the bodily ailment is removed.
Imam Abu Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr said: When the mention of the Islam of the jinn has achieved its goal, its purpose has been fulfilled, and its foundation has been established, which is the informing of the response of these [jinn] and the deprivation of those who were more deserving of the response and closer in apparent matters to repentance, after the advance of their warning and their severe threats. He directed the speech to his ﷺ matters that are required of him from the duties of his worship and what is required of him in his remembrances from his night and day, beginning that with the most beautiful words and the gentlest address: 'O you who wraps himself [in garments]' [Al-Muzzammil: 1]. And this was a consolation for him ﷺ as it has been mentioned: 'So let not your soul be consumed by them in regrets' [Fatir: 8] to its end. And so that he may attain concern for the obstinacy of those who have preceded in their obstinacy and the multitude of their obstinacy. He followed that with what bears witness to this purpose and supports it, which is His saying, the Most High: 'So be patient with a beautiful patience' [Al-Ma'arij: 5], 'And be patient over what they say and avoid them with a good avoidance' [Al-Muzzammil: 10], and 'And leave Me with the deniers, those of ease, and give them respite a little' [Al-Muzzammil: 11]. And this is the essence of what is mentioned in His saying, the Most High: 'So let not your soul be consumed by them in regrets' [Fatir: 8] and in His saying: 'We know best what they say, and you are not upon them a tyrant' [Qaf: 45]. Then He said: 'Indeed, with Us are chains' [Al-Muzzammil: 12], so He mentioned what He has prepared for them. And if you reflect on these verses, you will find them decisive regarding what we have presented, and it will be clear to you the connection of what has been mentioned. Then the speech returned to the gentleness towards him, blessings and peace be upon him, and towards his companions - may Allah be pleased with them all - and the most generous reward for them, despite the occurrence of shortcomings from those who are capable of glorifying the true deity, glorified is His majesty: 'He knew that you would not be able to enumerate it, so He turned to you, so recite what is easy from the Qur'an' [Al-Muzzammil: 20]. Then He concluded the surah with seeking forgiveness for all that has preceded from the obstinacy of the deniers, whose mention has been made previously in the surah, to what the responding servants cannot fulfill regarding what His saying, the Most High, indicates: 'He knew that you would not be able to enumerate it' [Al-Muzzammil: 20] - this has ended.
