Commentary
And when this matter of his was such that what he does is very burdensome due to the possibility of their elevation, he informed of the near relief by threatening them with swift punishment. He said: "And leave Me" meaning let Me be in whatever state I have agreed upon in dealing with them. He showed in the place of concealment a connection of the ruling with the description and generalization. He said: "And the deniers" meaning those deeply entrenched in denial. For indeed, I am capable of having mercy on them and punishing them. And when he mentioned their description for which they deserved punishment, he mentioned the reason for it as a deterrent and a diversion from associating with his people, lest the association become a trial that leads to the characterization with it and a pull towards the love of this world. He said: "Those of bounty" meaning the possessors of enjoyment with the lushness of life and the joy that the blessing has granted them - with the kasrah, it is the favor and what one enjoys from wealth and children, and the status that the blessing has granted - with the dammah, it is the joy that necessitates gratitude. They are the leaders of Quraysh and their wealthy ones.
And when the All-Knowing, the Powerful, says such a thing to a guardian from His guardians, He hastens to punish his enemy. He said, clarifying the intended meaning by what He commanded regarding patience concerning these worldly blessings, that their time is short: "And give them respite" meaning let them be gently, with patience and gradualness, and do not concern yourself with their affair.
And when He was pleased with His severe warning to them with this phrase, the meaning of which is that He took them by the hand, while He, glorified and exalted is He, asks for their delay, He increased in the good tidings by saying: "A little" meaning of time and respite until their death or their downfall before it. And there was a short time between the descent of this verse and the Battle of Badr - this was said by Al-Muhibb Al-Tabari - and in it is good tidings for him, blessings and peace be upon him, of remaining after their taking as it was, and that he does not need in their affair to anything other than entrusting them to Him, glorified and exalted is He, by casting them from his concern, blessings and peace be upon him, and freeing his outward and inward for what he is commanded by Allah, glorified and exalted is He, of turning to Allah, glorified and exalted is He. Thus, in the verse, whoever engages with his enemy, Allah entrusts him to himself. Therefore, that is like a barrier from Allah's taking [him], and if he relies upon Him, he has removed [that barrier].
