Commentary
And when the agency is only in matters that one is unable to handle, and the matter indicates that there must be long calamities and earthquakes and horrors accompanying this heavy saying, He said: "And be patient." He indicated the greatness of patience by using the preposition of elevation, saying: "upon what." He eased the matter by indicating that they will not reach anything other than harm by their words. He magnified it by their persistence upon it, saying: "They say," meaning the opponents understood from the agency that they are repelling the truth with falsehood regarding Allah's right and your right.
And when avoiding what is disliked is only in cases of necessity, which alleviates its harm, He said: "And avoid them," meaning turn away from them openly, repelling the chaos as much as possible, "with a beautiful avoidance" by treating them outwardly and differentiating from them inwardly and in your thoughts. So do not mix with them except in what Allah has commanded you regarding what He has specified for you in calling them to Him, glorified and exalted is He, and in attending their joys and sorrows, so you fulfill their rights and do not demand your rights from them, neither explicitly nor implicitly.
